What It Looks Like When I Conduct a Ceremony

28 March 2025  ·  By Mandy Forrester

Families often tell me that one of the hardest parts of choosing a celebrant is not knowing what to expect. They want to feel confident that the person standing at the front of the room will hold the space with care — that they will be calm, warm and fully present. I completely understand that. It is, after all, one of the most significant moments in a family's life.

That's why I wanted to share this footage — a real ceremony, conducted by me. I hope it gives you a sense of not just how I work, but how a celebrant-led service can feel.

What You Will Notice

A few things tend to stand out when people watch a celebrant-led ceremony for the first time. The pace is unhurried. There is space for silence, for emotion, for the words to land. Nothing feels rushed or formulaic. This is intentional — grief deserves time, and so does the celebration of a life.

You will also notice that the ceremony is specific. The words spoken are about one person, not a generalised tribute that could apply to anyone. The stories, the details, the character that comes through — all of that comes from the conversations I have with the family beforehand. It is, in every sense, bespoke.

Before the Day

What you see on the day is the result of a process that begins weeks earlier. I meet with the family, listen carefully, ask questions, and then go away and write. I share drafts, take feedback, and refine until every word feels right. By the time I step up to conduct the ceremony, I know the person I am speaking about — not as a stranger, but as someone whose life I have been trusted to honour.
